Now that I am buying 1/4 watermelons & cutting them up myself, instead of buying pre-cut, I can tell you that my child eats over 1/2 of a watermelon all by himself each week.

Am I alone in wondering why McCain and Obama worry so much about saying things that might alienate the hardcore party members? I mean what's a crazy right wing Republican going to do if McCain says something he doesn't like? Vote for Obama? And vice versa, a bleeding heart lefty liberal feels that Obama's views on one thing or another are too conservative...he's going to vote for McCain? Not vote? If it was me, I'd be a lot more worried about reaching out to the people who aren't committed to either party, and less worried about offending those who will probably vote along party lines regardless.

I was listening to Don Cheadle on Fresh Air today on my walk, and he said something about being a celebrity activist. In his case it was for Darfur, but it applies to many causes. He attributed a quote to Brad Pitt that was "We can't get out of the spotlight & these people can't get into it." and went on to say that he felt it was his duty as someone in the spotlight to share it with these people who so desperately needed and deserved the world's attention.

I thought he made an excellent point. I like him so much, both as an actor and a person. Though I hear his new film is kind of bad.

Some long-time family friends of Sean's dad came down to Galveston for the party & have also sent us a gift card in thanks for buying dinner. Isn't that sweet? We have free money at Kohl's now! So we can go shopping before our free Outback meal.

Over the weekend, I said something about Sean's mom being critical of Cash, in a friendly, conversational & non-confrontative way, of course, I'm not stupid enough to openly criticize his mother to him. I was surprised that he felt the same way, that she'd been unfairly critical of some of Cash's behavior and that he almost said something to her twice about it. That made me happy.

Also, I spoke to my grandfather again this weekend, regarding the companion search I am doing. It was very sad, he said he has to give my grandmother anti-depressants & she still starts crying intermittently, and says she wants to die. He's got so many people trooping in and out of the house, Medicare nurses, physical therapists, the part-time caregivers from the agency, and he has to keep the schedules all straight. He says he can hardly remember his own name at his age, much less who is coming when.

At the end of the conversation I told him to have a good weekend and he said "I can't have a good weekend anymore. I haven't had a good weekend in more years than I can even count."

Just heartbreaking that you live that long and that's how it ends up, you know?

So, I mentioned friday night in my saturday picture post, it was by far Cash's best night ever. I really think the nightweaning has pretty much been a success.

Cash & I were both is very happy moods saturday morning, so much sleep! We watched teevee until Sean got up, went out for caffeine, then came back to finish SSU. Sean had to finish his school work, so Cash and I went out to the playground. We only lasted about 30 minutes, it was just so so hot. Cash was all flushed and we were both drenched in sweat. So we came on home and played on the porch for a bit before naptime.

He had a good 2.5 hour nap (it's so true that sleep begets sleep in babies) and woke up happy and full of smiles. And hungry! He came in here to hug Sean and I, then grabbed my hand and took me to the kitchen for his watermelon & sweet potatoes.

We went for our walk (hot!) then got fruit at Winn Dixie. And a rotisserie chicken for dinner. Cash has really started to like chicken the last month or so, he's always been kind of meh about it before.

Finished watching Burn Notice while Cash had his evening playtime...I don't know if I have mentioned this, but I've been putting the subtitles on on our dvds or closed captioning on teevee shows, because since I am constantly moving around, playing with Cash, sitting on the floor reading to him, or having noisy toys played with in my immediate vicinity, I find it so much easier to have the text right there. If I miss a line, I can look up and read it.

Saturday night was not as stellar as the previous two. His first wake up around midnight was awesome, he fell back asleep with a minute of rocking and no screaming. But then he woke up at four-thirty and wouldn't go back to sleep until six. Then, after I'd gone back to my own bed and just drifted off, he woke up again not a half hour later. So we just got up.

Once Sean was also awake, we went out to get caffeinated. I was in the middle of ordering a peppermint mocha when I stopped and actually yelped for joy because I saw pumpkin spice latte on the menu. Sadly, it wasn't very good for some reason.

Went for a drive, including past this house

...which we went into when it was being built. They only want $2.5 million for it, what a deal. Ha! It really is gorgeous, right on the water. Unfortunately, they have a perfect view of the paper mill on the opposite shore. Man, that thing is a blight on our community.

Came home & Cash played in the baby pool for a bit. Then Sean had to put the finishing touches on his paper, so I took Cash to Petsmart for kitty food, kitty viewing, and bird watching. He likes to watch the finches and parakeets in their cages.

From there we went to Books a Million. He played with the train table & kid-friendly displays while I sat in a chair next to the trains and read. He was so enthralled with having all the Thomas toys to himself, I was actually able to read in peace for over 15 minutes! It was so nice!

He has recently caught on that planes fly, just two night sago, he started waving his airplane toy from the set [info]grlykitty gave him around in the air making *whoosh* noises like I make when I play with that with him. And at Books a Million, he did the same thing with Harold the Helicopter. Just precious!

He wandered off to the baby book section and found lots of books with doggies. Which he panted at. Eventually I had to drag him screaming out of the store, he always hates to leave that place.

Came home and put him down for a nice three hour nap. Sean and I watched the football on teevee & our fantasy stats online. So fun to have it going again! The Saints didn't play that well, but at least they won, and covered the spread, so I win my great big $9.50 bet that [info]moober placed for me. My fantasy team did well, I beat [info]jrsonday, and may come in first for the week!

Poor Sean. He blew his first round pick on Tom Brady & what happens? So sad. I mean for Tom Brady & Pats fans, not just Sean. It just seems like that's how Sean's fantasy luck always goes though!

Cash woke up in time to do his TOUCHDOWN move for the Saints for the first time. Very exciting.

Had his lunch, we walked, went to Winn Dixie for watermelon, since the slice I'd bought at WalMart was going bad already, and we just don't run want to run out of watermelon around here.

I got all excited because the Bertoli olive oil had a dollar off coupon hanging on the bottle, and a sign on the shelf said $1 off. So for $5.49 I could get one ounce more than the cheaper brand which was $5.49. Then when I rang it all up, I found the store had a $1 off sale on it plus the $1 off coupon, so it was 17 ounces for $4.49! I know I am a housewife when I am getting all psyched about $2 off olive oil.

We watched The Band's Visit after dinner while Cash made some crayon drawings. He is getting better about not eating the crayons! The Band's Visit is very sweet and funny, I highly recommend it.

Mr B took ages to go to sleep, and of course Lola came clambering over the gate the moment he started to drift off at long last. I either have to get that 42" gate or make a hat out of her. She's making me crazy, as much as I love her & adore how sweet she is with Mr Baby.

Watched some of the VMAs, but we're just too old to enjoy them anymore. Ashlee Simpson is huge, especially compared to that stumpy little turd of a baby daddy she's got.

God bless my child, he slept through the night, from bedtime to 0500. My goal is to get him to sleep until six or later, so I spent that hour trying to get him back to sleep. He fell asleep right at six and slept for almost another hour, so I got a little extra too. I'm so pleased with him, adapting to the new rules.

He got up in time to say bye-bye to Sean, then we snuggled on the sofa and watched Sunny Side Up. Well, we snuggled for the first 10 minutes or so, and then he was off and running, but it was nice while it lasted!

I was torn between going to the beach or the Jr Museum, so I called Michelle to see what she was planning on. She was going tot he museum, so we decided to do that too. I'm glad we did, it was a lot of fun! There were some really nice people there, lots of moms with 2-3 year olds and newborns, some of whom I talked to about the transition from one to two. Sean is still on the fence about a second, and I have promised not to press him about it for another year. But I collect ammo for that time whenever I can :)

I talked to one couple who were there with their four boys, the mom was a sweetheart and said she couldn't imagine having a second when her first was a baby, but after she had the second it was so awesome they had two more! It was nice seeing how good all the older boys were with their littlest brother (18 months) and with the other little ones.

Cash got tired around noon, though we had two false starts leaving, he kept waving bye bye but then he'd want to get back down and play with Andrew and Jackson. Once we were home, he had a little meltdown, then slept for just an hour. I actually fell asleep for a quick power nap while trying& failing to get him back down. When I woke up and he was still laying there playing with his stuffed animals, I just decided to give up & feed him lunch.

It looked like rain while he was asleep, but cleared up in time for our walk. He's so funny with the panting at doggies he always does now. Even yards where we sometimes see a dog, if they aren't out, he will still pant at it, in hopes that maybe the doggie will magically appear.

It's been a week since MiL left with Bruno and he still sometimes will point into the backyard and pant, thinking perhaps Bruno is still out there hiding somewhere.

AFter his walk, he wanted to go skinny dipping for a while. When he was done, he tried to dump the pool out. I did it for him, then he took it from me & dragged it to the storage shed! He is getting so good about putting things away. The the Jr Museum today, he put a bunch of fruit in the scale, then put it all back in the proper bins, even putting a tomato in the apple bin for a moment, before studying it, then taking it out and moving it down to the tomato bin. Smartie.

We finally watched The Shield season premiere & it was 100% made of awesome. Boy I will miss that show.

Cash was just a terror tonight, he was tired and his teeth hurt. Lots of shrieking and whining. He was exhausted and went to bed an hour early! Hopefully he sleeps okay in spite of the discomfort. Poor kid, he has been teething without a break for so long now. I hope his 2 year molars don't decide to be early!

Cool guy Cash approves this post

Babies in sunglasses are made of win. So cute!

Agreed. There's a third option that's problematic, though, and that's the party-line voter who chooses not to vote. If, for instance, the evangelical right just decided to stay home, the Republican party would be screwed. I can't sympathize, because I vote just as reliably for dog catcher as for president, but I think I'm an exception there. Lots of people still choose none of the above.

*nods* But it does seem like the comments I hear in the NPR are all "Well he doesn't want to come down too hard on this, or too left/right on this because that would upset/offend/whatever the party faithful/core voters". It seems like the party faithful are the folks who are going to vote, and vote down party lines, no matter what.

I'd just so much rather hear the honest truth of what they believe as individuals as opposed to what they feel they have to say to line up with a party that I don't really like (on both sides).

Tell Sean that's what he gets for going for Brady. :P

Am I alone in wondering why McCain and Obama worry so much about saying things that might alienate the hardcore party members?

No, you're not. I've never quite understood this. I can't see the hardcore folks staying home, either, especially the older ones (who tend to be most hardcore).

It never fails, whoever Sean gets that's super hot & a can't miss winner gets injured early on. Poor guy.

It just baffles me when I hear them say who and such doesn't want to say too much about this and stuff because his views are not in line with the party's and he doesn't want to alienate the core voters. That's just weird to me, I'd think highlighting where they're not in lockstep with the party is a great way to get swing voters!

Maybe Sean's mom was just cranky due to evacuation stress? Either way I am glad he agrees with you. I could not deal with my MIL if Pat did not give me 100% total unwavering support.

What I can't figure out is how the party who criticized Hillary Clinton for having a career in 1992, with one child, now thinks Sarah Palin is the bees knees. This is just... so confusing to me.

If McCain acted like McCain of 2000 and chose a proper running mate, *I* would have even been interested in possibly seriously considering voting for him. So yeah, I'm with you on the "what, like they're gonna vote for the other party?" idea.

No, she was enjoying herself here & this was not out of line with how she has acted at times in the past, just more pronounced.

I will probably vote for a major party candidate this year, for only the second time in 5 elections. But I don't know which one yet, there's things I like and hate about them both. I'd like to see them do more reaching out to independent voters like me, than trying to appease the party faithful who will vote for them regardless.

It really is sad about your grandparents. Is there any chance they'd consider moving into a retirement home or a nursing home? It might be easier on both of them to know that their main needs are cared for already, and they're somewhere that the schedule wouldn't need to be dealt with by your grandfather.

My guess would be no, obviously if they haven't done so by now, they either can't afford it or don't want to, for whatever reason. Since I haven't spoken to them in 20 years, I don't really feel it's my place to tell him what to do, I'm just trying to help where it seems help is needed and appreciated.

I had the opportunity to work with Don in 1996, when he was a struggling actor and playwright. He wrote a wonderful play called "Groomed" which made it into the Mark Taper Forum's New Work Festival; Don had been a favorite actor of then-director of casting, the late great Stanley Soble, and had tipped Oliver, our literary manager and a playwright himself, that Don had written something and we really ought to look at it. He was one of ten chosen for the workshops that year and I was part of the production staff that produced them. I found Don to be one of the most intelligent, professional, courteous, humorous, focused, dedicated people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting and I remember then, I could not take my eyes off of him. I never forgot him. When he became famous, years later, it surprised me, only because in Hollywood, it seems the most untalented assholes get the most attention. Happily, in Don's case, that didn't prove to be true, and he's having a great career while still remaining true to himself. I think it's partly because he is such a brainiac, and also because he worked so hard to be recognized as an actor; he really values the work, not the celebrity, but his enthusiasm and dedication is just so infectious it is absolutely impossible not to love working with him.

They actually are worried that the hardcore base will stay home. McCain more than Obama. I read a lot of blogs from both sides (I want to know what the other side is thinking/saying because all my family and friends are as liberal as I am and I don't want to be sheltered), and there were tons of people on the right who really hated McCain during the primaries. They wanted Huckabee if they were Evangelicals and one of the other guys if their issue was immigration or taxes. McCain didn't really appeal to most of the base because he'd strayed from the party line too much over the years and hadn't gotten along with Bush. There was an Evangelical leader, I think James Dobson, who actually did encourage Evangelicals to sit out this election because they were so anti-McCain. Now people on the lefty blogs are freaking out because Sarah Palin has energized the base and they can't count on all those people staying home anymore.

I don't see the "I'll stay home" thing as much on the left, but it was definitely there during the primaries. More from Hillary supporters than Obama's. People were going to stay home if their preferred candidate didn't get the nomination, but they mostly seem to be over it now.

My husband is one of those far left people who would stay home, though. He voted for Nader in 2000 and wanted to in 2004, but I talked him into voting for Kerry and he's felt like a sellout ever since. He likes Obama so it's not a problem this time around. But I am one of the above-mentioned yellow dog Democrats.

[info]paulstory77
2008-09-09 03:10 am UTC (link)
Trust me, they both care about your vote, since you're an independent voter in a crucial swing state!! The 10% of voters in the middle will decide this election!! There was some concern about the religious right base not turning out for McCain, but I think his choice of Palin helps him there. And the liberal base is firmly behind Obama, even though he wasn't their first choice.

I know you don't like to talk politics on your blog, which I respect, so I'll try not to start a big thing here.

But I'm absolutely, positively baffled that ANYONE could be undecided in this election. The candidates -- and the parties -- have polar opposite positions on nearly every issue.

Just to list a few examples, do you believe in universal healthcare, or not? Do you believe the Iraq War was a mistake, or not? Do you believe global warming is a problem for Cash's generation, or not?

The only way I can see that someone could be truly, legitimately undecided is if you are evenly split on the various issues -- you believe in 50% of Obama's positions, and 50% of McCain's. But I've never met anyone like that. When I talk with friends/acquaintances who call themselves undecided, and question them on the issues, all of them would fall into one camp or the other.

Yet they continue to insist that they'll vote for who they "like better," or some other nonsense.

Or, maybe it's not nonsense. McCain's own campaign manager said this election "wouldn't be about issues," but rather about personalities. So maybe I'm the one that's off-base here.

But for those of us under the age of 40, this is the most important election of our lives. And the candidates are so diametrically opposed to each other, it's unbelievable to me that anyone could be undecided at this point.

Great point.

I get excited when the Fall flavors are back in town, I noticed a sign outside of the Rita's Italian Ice that says they have pumpkin pie ice now. Out loud, driving home alone, I said "OOOOOH YEAH THAT'LL BE GOOD WITH VANILLA CUSTARD!!" I'm a sucker for all flavors Fall.

That house is gorgeous. There is a home very similar to that I found last night taking a different road home from work. Just looking at it from the inside relaxes me.

Food Lion had Perdue boneless skinless chicken breast on sale the other day for $1.87/lb, which is unheard of. I was so excited I called my mom and my best friend to make sure they stocked up on it/obtained a rain check. Domestic women at your service.

I watched the VMAs. There was nothing else on, I was thumbing through magazines and Patrick was gaming. And let me tell you, if MTV has lowered their standards to a host like Brand, they might as well close up shop. Most tacky, rude person I've seen on television. You know I'm super into politics (having worked for a Member of Congress). For the first time ever, my younger brother is interested in politics which is weird considering how into it my dad and I are although we differ on our stances. He is very much an independent and really dislikes both parties, but he has found a candidate he believes in.

I have a hard time with people who vote strictly based on the party, even if they don't like the candidate. My dad does this. Yes, I'm affiliated with one party but I will absolutely vote for the other party if I believed in the candidate.

Both McCain and Obama had to solidify their bases during the convention. I think now we will start to see them reaching out to people like you, as they should. Good for you for taking the time to figure out who it is you want to support.

Have you and Sean talked about getting a dog?

We will get a dog in about 5 years or so. As soon as we saw how much less attention the cats got once Mr Baby came home with us, we realized it was unfeasible to get a dog until Cash is older. And by that time, hopefully, there will be another baby in the house. Once #2 is 3ish we plan to adopt a retired Greyhound.

Plus then Cash gets the joy of asking for a dog and finally getting one as opposed to just always having had one around.

Your poor grandparents. :( That is sad.

Audrey got her 2 year molars around 18 months I believe. They suck.

Leah only has her bottom 2 teeth!

Yay! for Cash sleeping!

I know, I kept thinking poor Cash would get a break after his eyeteeth, but I bet those stinking 2 years will come right after them. Poor kid.

He was up from 2-3 this morning, but slept for 6 hours on one side and four ont he other, so I don't even mind. He is doing great.

It's interesting, because I actually feel like Obama has been spending much more of his time reaching out towards the middle/right (I think Obama himself is pretty middle-left, not far to the left at all), and has been ignoring a lot of his base ever since he won the primary. It's beginning to tick off some members of his base -- I actually see a lot of people who are upset enough about this to vote third-party or not vote (I remember you commented on a post I'd made to that effect -- the person I quoted was far from the only one I've seen).

I used to respect McCain, but he's done some things politically that made it impossible for me to respect him any more. I still respect his military service, but I no longer think he'd be any good as a leader of the country. I won't get into any more details here to avoid starting some big debate, but that's my opinion right now.

I love Cash's shades in that last picture!
